The Association of American Feed Control Officials (AAFCO) sets the real, actual standard behind every “complete and balanced” claim on a pet food label in the United States. Their nutrient profiles — covering Adult Maintenance and Growth & Reproduction life stages, first established in 1991 for dogs and updated as new science emerges — are the framework state regulations and the FDA reference when evaluating pet food claims.
This course builds real nutrition literacy on that foundation: how to actually read a pet food label, what AAFCO life stage claims mean, feeding trials versus nutrient analysis, life-stage and species-specific nutrition needs, weight management, and recognizing when a nutrition question needs to be referred to a veterinarian. This course does not grant a formal veterinary nutrition credential — it uses AAFCO’s real regulatory framework as a grounded foundation for informed, honest product guidance.
